Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • Salt, to taste

  • Black pepper, to taste

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Mushroom Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 medium onion, sliced

  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Garlic Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed

  • 3–4 garlic cloves

  • ½ cup milk (or cream)

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Mashed Potatoes

Place the potatoes and garlic cloves in a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15–20 minutes, until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain well.

Mash the potatoes with butter and milk until smooth and creamy. Season with salt to taste. Cover and keep warm.

Step 2: Make the Salisbury Steaks

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined.

Form the mixture into oval-shaped patties.

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Step 3: Prepare the Mushroom Gravy

In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and mushrooms and cook for 5–7 minutes until softened and lightly browned.

Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir well. Cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.

Gradually add the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and black pepper.

Step 4: Simmer and Finish

Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10–15 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the gravy thickens.

Serving Instructions

Serve the Salisbury steaks hot over a generous portion of garlic mashed potatoes. Spoon mushroom gravy over the top and garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Storage Tips

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days

  • Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave until warmed through

Recipe Notes

  • Do not overmix the beef mixture to keep the patties tender

  • Gravy thickness can be adjusted with additional broth if needed

  • Mushrooms can be sliced thin or thick based on preference
