Meat and Potato Casserole
Meat and Potato Casserole is a classic comfort food dish that combines tender layers of sliced potatoes, seasoned ground meat, and a creamy sauce baked to perfection. It’s hearty, flavorful, and easy to prepare, making it ideal for a family dinner or a cozy meal during cold days. Serve it with a green salad or steamed vegetables for a well-rounded meal.
Ingredients (Serves 4–6)
1 lb (500 g) ground beef (or a mix of beef and lamb)
6–7 medium potatoes, peeled
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves (optional), minced
¾ cup (200 ml) milk
½ cup (150 ml) heavy cream or cooking cream
1 tbsp flour
2 tbsp olive oil or butter
1 cup (100 g) grated cheese (optional, for topping)
Salt and black pepper to taste
Optional herbs: oregano, thyme, or fresh parsley
Instructions
1. Prepare the Ingredients
Peel the potatoes and boil them for about 8–10 minutes until slightly tender but not fully cooked. Let them cool, then slice into ¼ inch (0.5 cm) rounds.
In a skillet, heat olive oil and sauté the chopped onion and garlic until soft.
Add the ground meat, salt, pepper, and herbs. Cook until browned and no longer pink.
2. Make the Cream Sauce
In a separate saucepan, melt butter and stir in the flour. Cook for 1–2 minutes until golden.
Gradually whisk in the milk and cream, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
Simmer for 3–4 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Add salt, pepper, and grated cheese if using.
3. Assemble the Casserole
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
In a baking dish, layer sliced potatoes on the bottom.
Add a layer of the cooked ground meat mixture.
Spoon some of the cream sauce on top.
Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of potatoes and sauce on top.
Sprinkle grated cheese over the top for a crispy, golden finish (optional).
4. Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 30–35 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving to set properly.
Additional Tips
Add chopped carrots or zucchini between layers for extra vegetables.
For a vegetarian version, substitute meat with sautéed mushrooms or lentils.
You can store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat before serving.
