Hearty Hamburger Hash

This Hearty Hamburger Hash is a classic one-pan meal made with seasoned ground beef, tender diced potatoes, sautéed onions, and melted cheese. The ingredients are cooked together in a skillet until golden and flavorful, creating a hearty and satisfying dish with a rustic, homemade appearance.

The potatoes are lightly browned, the beef is well-seasoned, and the cheese melts directly over the mixture, forming a creamy layer that brings everything together. This recipe is simple, filling, and ideal for family dinners or quick weeknight meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and diced into small cubes

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley or Italian seasoning

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or mild cheddar cheese

  • ¼ cup water or beef broth (only if needed for softening potatoes)

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Potatoes

Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced potatoes and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften and turn lightly golden.

If needed, add a small amount of water or broth and cover briefly to help steam the potatoes.

Step 2: Brown the Ground Beef

Push the potatoes to one side of the skillet. Add the remaining olive oil and ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.

Drain excess grease if necessary.

Step 3: Add Onion and Garlic

Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet. Cook for 3–4 minutes, until softened and fragrant.

Season with salt, black pepper, paprika, and dried parsley.

Step 4: Combine and Finish

Stir the potatoes and beef together evenly. Add butter and mix gently until melted and coated.

Spread the mixture evenly in the pan and let it cook undisturbed for 2–3 minutes to develop light browning.

Step 5: Add Cheese

Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top. Reduce heat to low, cover the skillet, and cook for 3–5 minutes until the cheese is fully melted.

Remove from heat.
