Old-Fashioned Amish Beef and Potato Casserole

This Old-Fashioned Amish Beef and Potato Casserole is the definition of hearty comfort food. Layered with ground beef, tender potatoes, onions, and a creamy sauce, it’s baked until golden and bubbling — just like grandma used to make.

Simple, budget-friendly, and full of rich, down-home flavor, this casserole is perfect for cold nights, family dinners, or as a make-ahead dish for busy weeks.

Ingredients:

1 lb (450g) ground beef

1 medium onion, chopped

4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

1 can (10.5 oz / 300g) cream of mushroom soup (or homemade)

1/2 cup whole milk

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme or parsley (optional)

1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (optional topping)

Butter or oil for greasing dish

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Meat

In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and chopped onion until browned and fully cooked.

Drain excess fat. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Step 2: Make the Creamy Sauce

In a bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup with the milk until smooth.

Add thyme or parsley if using.

Step 3: Layer the Casserole

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking dish.

Layer half of the sliced potatoes on the bottom.

Add half of the cooked beef mixture.

Pour half of the soup mixture over.

Repeat layers: potatoes, beef, then remaining soup.

Cover tightly with foil.

Step 4: Bake

Bake for 60–70 minutes, or until potatoes are fork-tender.

Remove foil and top with cheese (if using), then bake uncovered for 10 more minutes until golden and bubbly.

Serving Suggestions

Serve with green beans, dinner rolls, or a fresh side salad.

This dish pairs wonderfully with applesauce or pickled beets for an authentic Amish-style meal.
