Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried Green Tomatoes are a classic Southern American dish, known for their crispy texture and tangy flavor. Made with firm, unripe green tomatoes, this recipe involves slicing them, coating in seasoned cornmeal and breadcrumbs, then frying until golden brown. Perfect as a snack, appetizer, or side dish, these crispy delights bring comfort food to a whole new level.

Ingredients:
Serves: 4

3–4 large green tomatoes

2 eggs

1/2 cup milk

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup cornmeal

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)

Salt to taste

Black pepper to taste

Vegetable oil for frying (or sunflower oil)

Instructions:
Prepare the tomatoes:

Wash and slice the green tomatoes into 1/4-inch (about 1 cm) thick rounds.

Place slices on a paper towel and lightly salt both sides.

Let sit for 10–15 minutes to draw out excess moisture.

Set up the coating stations:

In a shallow bowl: beat the eggs and mix with the milk.

In another dish: place the all-purpose flour.

In a third bowl: mix the cornmeal, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper.

Dredging process:

First, coat each tomato slice in flour (light dusting).

Then dip into the egg and milk mixture.

Finally, press into the breadcrumb and cornmeal mixture, coating both sides evenly.

Frying:
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Carefully place tomato slices in the hot oil (do not overcrowd the pan).
Fry for about 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Extra Tips
For added flavor, consider mixing garlic powder, smoked paprika, or cayenne pepper into the breading.

Serve hot with dipping sauces like ranch, garlic aioli, or spicy mayo.
Green tomatoes are firmer and less sweet than ripe red ones, making them perfect for frying.
