Monterey Sausage Pie is a rich and hearty pie filled with browned sausage, creamy Monterey Jack cheese, and a custard-like mixture of eggs and milk that sets perfectly in the oven. Ingredients:
1 lb (about 500 g) ground sausage (or cooked seasoned ground meat)
1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese (or any mild melting cheese)
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 large eggs
1 cup milk (or cream for a richer custard)
Salt, black pepper, and other seasonings (oregano, parsley, paprika) to taste
(Optional) chopped green or red bell peppers for added color and flavor
Instructions:
Cook the sausage: Brown the ground sausage in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked and slightly crispy. Drain excess fat if desired.
Sauté the onion: In another pan, sauté the chopped onion in a little oil or sausage fat until soft and translucent.
Make the custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and desired seasonings. This mixture will create a creamy filling that sets while baking.
Assemble the pie: Line a pie dish with the crust, pressing firmly into the edges. Layer the cooked sausage and sautéed onion evenly in the crust, then sprinkle shredded Monterey Jack cheese over the top.
Pour custard: Carefully pour the egg and milk mixture over the filling, making sure it’s evenly distributed.
Bake: Place the pie in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the filling is set and the top is golden brown.
